What finishing options are available for SLS parts?

We use the DyeMansion Powershot DUAL to ensure all items are ready for use after 3D printing. This state-of-the-art blasting system perfectly cleans and smooths surfaces, making it ideal for functional, aesthetic, and high-value parts. The machine can also color parts, while dramatically reducing post-processing times via hardware and software automation. How does SLS prototyping work?

SLS 3D printers use a high-power laser to draw each layer of a 3D design into a bed of powder. In our case, the powder is white Nylon PA 12. The laser sintering process binds the powder particles together, forming solid structures. This occurs as the build plate of the printer lowers into the print bed after printing each layer. A powder recoater then spreads new powder onto the previous layer, with a layer thickness typically between 50 and 200 microns. When printed parts complete, items are de-powdered, and much of the remaining powder is recyclable. Printed parts can then go through professional finishing machines to perfectly clean, smooth, and color products.

How accurate is SLS 3D printing?

Selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing is the most common additive manufacturing technology, and typically very precise. SLS mostly often functions to produce highly complex geometries, including parts with balanced property profiles and strong structures. It has a dimensional tolerance of 0.3% and a lower limit of ± 0.3 mm. The lasers and galvanometers enable precise control, while additional factors determine overall accuracy. These include the optical performance of the laser, print parameters and powder settings, and environmental conditions.
