3D-Printed Cable Management: Clips, Combs and Cable Chains in PA 12

White SLS nylon cable clips and channel holding grey cables on an aluminium profile, one orange clip

Standard cable ties and clips fit standard situations. Machines, control cabinets, test rigs, robot cells and electronics housings are rarely standard. With SLS you print clips, combs, channels and strain reliefs that fit the exact profile, cable diameters and space, in tough PA 12 and in any quantity. This guide shows what to print, how to design clips that hold and where the material limits are.

Why PA 12 works for cable management

  • Tough and flexible. EOS gives PA 2200 an elongation at break of 18 % within the layer plane, so clips can flex open without breaking.
  • Light. A density of 0.93 g/cm³ adds little mass to moving machine parts.
  • Chemical resistance. EOS lists PA 2200 as resistant to water, fuels, oils and glycol, which matters in machines; see PA 12 heat, chemical and UV resistance.
  • Electrical rating. EOS gives a comparative tracking index (CTI) of at least 600 (IEC 60112). This is a material rating, not a certification of a part.

Designing clips that hold

  • Snap opening. Make the opening slightly narrower than the cable or the profile it clips onto, and give the arms enough length to flex. The strain rules are in snap-fit joints in SLS PA 12.
  • Bend within the layer plane. PA 2200 stretches much less across the layers (EOS: 4 % compared with 18 %). In the calculator you can choose the layer plane per part, so the arms flex within the layers.
  • Round the roots. Fillets where the arms meet the base prevent cracks after many cycles.
  • Lead-in chamfers. A chamfer on the entry guides the cable in and reduces the force needed.
  • Walls. At least 0.8 mm, better 1.2 to 2 mm for arms that flex; thinner arms are fragile.
  • Test first. Our dimensional guideline is ±0.3 % (at least ±0.3 mm). For a tight snap, order a few test clips in different sizes in one order before the series.

Channels, lids and strain reliefs

Channels with snap-on lids follow the same rules as enclosures with snap lids; see 3D-printed enclosures and housings. A strain relief should clamp the cable over a length, not at a point, and have a rounded exit edge so the cable does not kink. Screw-on parts that are mounted and removed often get threaded inserts; see threads and inserts in SLS PA 12.

Printed cable chains

A drag chain can be printed as one assembly of interlocked links. The gaps between moving surfaces need about 0.5 mm, and the powder must be able to leave each joint; see print-in-place hinges. The calculator counts interlocked links as one part, because their boxes overlap, and checks that the whole chain fits the chamber (200 × 250 × 330 mm nominal); a long chain can be folded or printed in sections that snap together. Printed chains suit light cables and moderate cycle counts; for heavy, high-cycle drag chains a catalog product is usually the better choice.

Color coding

Dyed clips and combs help to tell circuits apart at a glance: one color per voltage, signal type or machine module. Black and orange are in stock; the other 59 colors add about one month (20 working days) at the same price. See dyeing SLS parts.

Limits

  • Fire: EOS rates PA 2200 UL 94 HB, not a flame-retardant class. Where a flame-retardant material is required, PA 12 as we print it is not the right choice.
  • Heat: EOS gives -40 to +80 °C under steady stress; check clips near motors, resistors or heat sinks.
  • Safety-relevant installations: compliance of an electrical installation is the responsibility of whoever designs and builds it. We do not certify parts.

Ordering

Model the clips for your cables and profiles, upload all variants together and set the quantity per part. Clips are small, so many fit into one order, and above a certain total volume of parts in one order a volume discount on printing applies. Step by step: how to order SLS 3D printing online. Frequently asked questions

Can cable clips be 3D printed in nylon?

Yes. PA 12 is tough and flexible enough for snap-on clips that are opened and closed many times, and SLS prints them without supports in any shape and quantity.

Are SLS PA 12 cable clips flame retardant?

EOS rates PA 2200 UL 94 HB, which is not a flame-retardant rating. Applications with fire safety requirements need a suitable material and tests on the finished part; we do not certify parts.

What temperatures can printed cable clips handle?

EOS gives PA 2200 a range of -40 to +80 °C under steady stress. Clips near hot components or heat sources need checking.

Can a cable chain be printed in one piece?

Yes. Drag chain links can be printed assembled when the gaps between them are about 0.5 mm and the powder can escape. Interlocked links are counted as one part in the calculator.

How do I make printed clips fit my cables?

Model the opening slightly smaller than the cable for a snap fit, or with clearance for a loose guide. Our dimensional guideline is ±0.3 % (at least ±0.3 mm); for a tight fit, print a test clip first.
